What is a Controlled Waste Transfer Note?

Controlled Waste Transfer Notes ('CWTN') are used whenever controlled, non-hazardous waste is transferred between parties, such as from a business to a waste management company, a landfill site, or when waste is transported across international borders.

These are legally kept on file and accessible for 3 years. They are an essential aspect of waste management in the United Kingdom.

They allow accurate recording if you produce, transport or manage hazardous waste within a commercial environment and must follow all the legal rules of the control system set out by the UK government.

They refer to the legal responsibility placed on individuals and organisations to ensure that the transfer of controlled waste is carried out in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.

They are typically produced as carbonless NCR (No Carbon Required) forms, with multiple copies for each party involved in the waste transfer.

The notes may also include information about the disposal or treatment of the waste, as well as any hazardous properties of the waste. They may also include guidance and instructions for the safe handling and disposal of the waste.

This duty encompasses various activities, including collection, storage, transportation, and disposal of controlled waste.
